Social Enterprise SIG: The state of illiteracy in India - why it's worse than anyone thought!!

Tuesday, 18 March 2008

One of the most enduring clichés about India is that it is a country of contradictions. Like all clichés, this one too has a grain of truth in it. At the heart of the contradiction stands the state of Illiteracy in India! On one hand, India is the 2nd largest English speaking country in the world, and on the other hand, India ranks highly among the illiterate countries in the world! It’s a nation where the difference between the progressive and the retrogressive India is so vast that it’s impossible to see them as realities of the same country. However the reality is that the verdict of the poor and illiterate people is roughly the same as that of the literate and informed population in society. Human beings are endowed with the same amount of dignity and they have the same democratic right and freedom of choice irrespective of their origins, level of literacy, wealth, talent and accomplishments.

We urge you to come and attend this interesting & interactive session on Tuesday the 18th of March about this pragmatic situation in a country which is not only one of the fastest growing economies in the world but also has the potential of achieving superpower status soon!!

Victor Lyons, CEO, Reading Wise will discuss the impact of literacy on developing entrepreneurial skills in India. Tara Akshar is a Literacy Program which uses effective new teaching skills and is therefore the fastest most effective literacy project in the world. With 291 centers across Northern India, the program saw 20 000 successfully graduated last year.
