I am co-Founder of Mesh - a trusted network of creative business professionals. Having qualified as a lawyer in September 2006, I yearn to have more time to explore a ‘creative second life’ as a writer or stenciler, but currently have to make do as a blogger (http://www.meshminds.blogspot.com ) and a cultural entrepreneur!

Q&A
  • Why do you think networking is important?

Harnessing the collective intelligence of a like-minded community can be incredibly powerful in terms of boosting the success rates on projects. Networking is vitally important between the business professions that we have initially targeted for the Mesh community.

Contacts made can generate new business, ideas and facilitate projects. What Mesh aims to achieve is to encourage business professionals to use Mesh as a platform to facilitate collaborative creativity. Our audience are resource-rich but time-deprived so if they can share their time, the resulting enhancement of the creative economy could be amazing.

  • What is the best connection you have made or received?

Marcelo Dos Santos - a freelance writer - who was introduced to me by a friend. He loved the Mesh concept and decided to write a piece on Mesh for the Sunday Times Style magazine. Marcelo’s article was published when all we had was a holding page on the website. It gave us much needed notoriety and kudos and launched the concept before the eyes of a wide range of people, many of whom went on to become our Founding Members.

  • What are your top tips for effective networking?

Smile - there is nothing like a good smile to help yourself feel more relaxed and to relax those around you.

Firm handshake - there is nothing I hate more than a limp lettuce handshake.

Introduction - being able to introduce yourself in a succinct manner whilst leaving a little mystery to tempt the listener is a great way to engage.

  • What tools or resources do you use to keep in touch with people?

Facebook is invaluable in helping me to stay in contact with friends and meet new people.

Mesh aims to provide a niche network where people can go on with the purpose of sharing ideas and collaborating on creative projects which builds on the basic networking offered by Facebook.

Google Applications provides Mesh with remote access to our emails from anywhere in the world - a superb mobile office tool.
