Hi, my name is Julie and I’m the Marketing and Account Executive at the Centre for Women’s Enterprise, University of Bedfordshire. My role specialises in marketing and promotion, client and stakeholder relations and event organisation. I’m passionate about helping women of all ages to start their own enterprise or helping them in growing and developing established businesses.

I’ve worked within the Centre since October 2005 and have been involved in the co-ordination of various events for women including an award winning MBA programme, leadership training, business growth training and a starting a business programme in the local community. My previous roles have included working in a senior mortgage underwriting role at the head office of a large UK high street bank in addition to other retail and customer facing roles.

Q&A
  • What makes your network different or special?

The Centre for Women’s Enterprise isn’t just a network - yes, we do provide networking but we also provide a wealth of training events for new and established businesses and well as being able to signpost people to other support organisations.

We are a small, friendly, approachable, female only team who care and take time to get to know the women who work with us. All our training and networking events are friendly, informal and supportive.

  • What are your top tips for effective networking?

Don’t think of networking as a way of making sales, think of it as a way of building relationships with people and gaining invaluable contacts who can support you. What can you do for the people you have met and who can you connect them with? People always buy from people they remember as being sincere and helpful - take this approach and people will always be happy to refer you onto others for your services. Regulary attend just one or two networks and make an effort to really get to know people - this is much more effective than sporadically attending events here and there.

  • What advice do you have for a young entrepreneur who wants to make an idea happen?

Take all the support, training and learning that you can lay you hands on so you are really prepared with knowledge and support for your new venture. There are loads of organisations and individuals willing to offer support and training so take advantage of it! Make your Mark is just one great way of connecting with those people!
