Q&A
  • What are your top tips for being an effective networker

Networking is a very over used phrase, and for some people it just does not work. For some lack of confidence is an issue, but equally some try too hard to go for the big sell and risk loosing the attention of their audience. Some charge straight into a network event, arms bulging with flyers and pocketful of business cards in another. Organizers of events put ‘excellent networking opportunity’ into their marketing and everyone rushes along often only to be disappointed. Networking as a CONCEPT is good. However in reality it can be cold and impersonal. Instead it should be about trying to make a connection with your new contact, and manage, nuture and develop the relationship. Connection means sharing knowledge and resources, time and energy, friends and associates in a continual effort to provide value for others, whilst increasing your own. Its a continuous process of giving and receiving. People do business with people they know and like. That’s why connecting is one of the most important skills sets you’ll ever develop.

  • What are your top tips for hosting a great networking event?

Its all about the person hosting the event…. the venue, timing and ambience can all adapt to the needs… Your organiser should be pleasant and approachable, make you feel welcome. Encouraging helping you become relaxed and confident. They should be Good listeners, receptive, open-minded. The organiser should also encouage people to find new and better ways of doing things. They should also be prepared to learn & share own experience, even the bad experiences, ina positive way. Once you have the right person “fronting” the event, everything else will just flow.

  • What is the best connection you have made or received?

I have been lucky to meet all sorts of people at all sorts of events, many of whom I have developed good relationships with. I think the best connection was winning a business award, cracking a few jokes in the acceptance speech and then being asked to deliver a whole conference session on the back of it!

  • What is your advice to a budding entrepreneur?

Never stop dreaming…. make time each day just to dream about your company will look, sound and feel. Try very very hard to put yourself in the shoes of your customers/clients, as it is the only way to view the business, continually doing this as your business grows is the only way to ensure long term customer loyalty and reputation.
