Maggie Berry is the Director of womenintechnology.co.uk. Maggie runs www.womenintechnology.co.uk , an online job board and networking forum for women working in the technology profession in the UK.

She has been involved since womenintechnology’s inception in the autumn of 2004 and manages all aspects of the website and the networking and training activities that womenintechnology organises. The network has over 3,000 members and the job board is helping a wide range of investment banks and technology firms to recruit more women into their IT divisions.

Her background is in technology recruitment within the financial services – she spent four years as a recruiter with McGregor Boyall Associates, a leading financial services recruitment consultancy. Prior to this she worked for NatWest as a Graduate Banking Manager, providing financial advice to final year university students and graduates. Maggie is a graduate of the University of East Anglia.

  • What are your tips for being an effective networker?

    Be strategic - think about what you want to achieve from the event.

    Think of a good icebreaker to get the conversation started, like commenting if someone is wearing a nice pair of shoes!

    Address any fears that you might have about networking by working through them before you start.

    Networking is integral to any role – whether internally within your organisation or externally. It’s really important to share your own knowledge and don’t underestimate what you can give.

    Know how to end a conversation with someone – say something like “Its been really lovely speaking with you but I do want to chat to others” or just pop to the ladies!

  • What are your tips for a young woman wanting to have a successful career in IT?

    • Use initiative and keep up to date with skills and know what is happening in the IT sector.

    • Continuously grow your knowledge on business demands/requirements as well as understand the technology out there that can support this. Good appreciation of organisation’s objectives and drives.

    • Self belief.

    • The same with any career - network!

    • Have an open mind - technology should be fit for purpose. If we follow this simple rule, we will achieve positive results in the workplace.

    • Be professional, be willing to listen and stay hungry.

    • Be pro–active, flexible and constantly improve work processes.

    • Have a good mentor so that if you do experience any problems they can talk you through them and suggest ways of solving them. Also have a good network of contacts.
