Internet entrepreneur and blogger.

Having been a sporting fanatic throughout his life, becoming a national champion and member of the English table tennis squad as a junior, David caught the entrepreneurial bug aged 20. After founding GroupSpaces Ltd (formerly ClickUni Ltd), winning places on courses and internships with McKinsey & Company, Lehman Brothers and JPMorgan, and leading various university sports clubs, David was awarded 2nd place in the UK Graduate of the Year competition in 2007.

David is currently CEO at GroupSpaces Ltd, a funded Internet start-up addressing the pains of group management and communication online. In his spare time he enjoys writing “Freed from The Matrix” (www.davidlanger.co.uk) – a blog giving an insight into the lives of young entrepreneurs and also the entrepreneurship section for national student newspaper, The Gateway.

Q&A
  • What makes GroupSpaces different or special?

GroupSpaces is building free Web-based tools to help clubs, societies, charities and other real-world groups manage themselves in our increasingly online world.

Many real-world groups have a mailing list running off a Yahoo! Group, a membership database in Excel, they organise events on Facebook and their website is looked after (with difficulty) somewhere else.

GroupSpaces provides the first solution to all these problems in one place.

  • Why is getting connected important to make things happen?

“It’s who you know, not what you know that matters.” - that’s the cliche I believe. And there’s a lot of truth to it.

Whether it’s customers, team members, investors or journalists, it’s always much easier to get what you need from people if you know them already (or can get personally introduced). Doing business through cold calls is an up hill struggle.

  • What are your top tips for hosting a great networking event?

    1. Name badges.
    2. Mix it up - not all standing around talking, but not so many presentations that there’s no time to talk.
    3. Alcohol - but not too much!
  • What are your best networking links / resources?

I use 3 social networking websites:

    1. Facebook - add me @ http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=36805294
    2. LinkedIn - add me @ http://www.linkedin.com/in/davidlanger
    3. YouNoodle - add me @ http://www.younoodle.com/people/david_langer
  • What is the best connection you have made or received?

I first met Michael Birch at Oxford Entrepreneurs’ Idea Idol event in 2007 where he was on the judging panel.

I then e-mailed him while I was in Silicon Valley in August that year and he toured the group I was with around Bebo HQ, as well as giving my co-founder and I the opportunity to share our vision for GroupSpaces.
