Business Support Network - Women in Business

Kath Tatlock, founding director of Business Support Network (SW) Ltd. Women in Business

Working with women’s networks over the past 10 years, including a national and international network, I was delighted when asked by Business Link Devon & Cornwall to set-up a ‘women’ network’ in the South West of England. My professional background started as a Management Accountant with a small business in South Wales which grew from acquisitions’ of companies throughout South Wales and the South West.

Finally, the company was brought out by a corporate ‘blue-chip’ company and I became the South of England Regional Management Accountant for the Motor Factoring Division which included the Midlands, South West, South Wales and South East of England. Being brought up on a farm in the rolling hills of Devon, I never considered myself ambitious to become a ‘corporate person’, but with a dynamic growing company, climbing the ‘career ladder’ was exciting for me, mostly because I had the opportunity to work with people who wanted to make things happen…it never ceased to amaze me all that we were able to achieve simply by ‘working together as one’. Then I had the opportunity to move to the USA with my husband’s job and with the blessing of a family, and a fabulous lifestyle I traveled and lived for 12 years.

Q&A
  • What are your tips for being an effective networker?

I am often asked by young people about networking – what is it? And I say it is something they are doing every day……

Social networking, when they are on their mobiles or through websites like Facebook, it is all about getting to know each other, building relationships, finding out more or not about each other in a very ‘social’ unthreatening way.

In a more formalize way with pre-arranged meetings, it is just the same – getting to know each other. For some, it is about being given the opportunity to meet others and talk about social things and share experiences good and bad which often results in long term friendships that help and support each other. For others, if it is an event organized for business people it is about being introduced or introducing yourself to people that may become a client or provide a service and in a two way conversation it is about getting to know each other with each party benefiting from receiving information about each others business in a very friendly manner.

  • What is your best advice to a young entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurial Spirit is unique to us all and is something that cannot be duplicated or captured by anyone and is very personal to you…..if you have a business idea make a personal statement to yourself on your ideas, aspirations, visions and values for your business in any format you like. It will act as a reference point at any time to reflect back on….especially if you come across the ‘dream stealers’! It also acts as a good planning stage to take the next step of accessing professional help and advice available from business start-up programmes in your area.

Even before getting started in your business we really encourage people to join a network, or more than one. This brings you the opportunity to access people who you will see on a regular basis and can offer you services to get started e.g. legal work, marketing & PR – it is an excellent referral system. It also puts you in touch with business people who have gone through the ‘hoops’ of getting started, what we call ‘the real thing’ and ‘key’ to any entrepreneurs success – learning from others!

    Four key stages:

A personal statement to yourself Access professional business start-up advice Join a network GO DO IT…
